God gave us faith and reason so that we can understand His creation and His revelation. A good example for this balance between science and faith may be found in Gregor Mendel who was a 19th century Augustinian friar and naturalist that we all learned about in high school biology classes. Mendel was a model for balancing science and religion as he pursued his groundbreaking genetics research while also being passionate for his devotion to God. Mendel not only taught us genetics but he showed that there should be no conflict between science and religion. However, in this article by the Associated Press, the ”Extremes in the debate can be seen in recent books by atheists who excoriate faith and in the new Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky., Collins said. The museum, which advocates a literal interpretation of the Bible, has attracted more than 400,000 visitors since it opened a year ago. ‘ Mendel would be horrified to see the way in which people are being asked to make a choice between God and science,’ Collins said. ‘That’s an unnecessary choice.’ ” Follow this link to read more about Mendel and the recognition he is getting for teaching us how to balance science and religion http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080626/NEWS/80626032/-1/rss08 .
