The 2nd edition of this work edited by RE Brown, JA Fitzmyer, and RE Murphy is a classic reference that provides an interpretation of the Bible using the tools of modern scientific criticism. This commentary provides an indepth look at the Bible from the points of view of the cultural, historical, literary, and religious aspects while respecting the Christian tradition. At 1426 pages plus an index this is quite a resource for serious research and investigation of the Bible.

Your review prompted a visit to Amazon.com (and a response to a 2001 review of the work). I noticed that the 3rd edition is now available.
With no particular relevance, the two books that have most influenced me are “Theology and Sanity” (Frank J. Sheed) and “The Seven Storey Mountain” (Thomas Merton).
